• Senior Accounting Technician

    Purpose of Position:

    • To mitigate financial risks to Anchor Concrete Products Ltd. (ACP), Anchor Rebar Supply Inc. (ARSI), Anchor Concrete Realty (2001) Ltd. (AR) and Lodestar Structures (Lodestar)
    • To monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports or data
    • To establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies and principles

    Major Responsibilities:

    General Accounting
    The Senior Accounting Technician will support the Accounting Manager and the Accounting Department with these responsibilities:

    • Review and approve journal entries, analysis, and reports from direct staff and others, on a weekly basis or as directed by senior management

    • Review monthly journal entries for foreign exchange revaluation, bad debt accrual, prepaid expenses, inventory balancing, depreciation, A/P balancing, and long-term debt reconciliation (including current-portion)

    • Review monthly operating events to determine whether a need has arisen to impair any assets and journalize accordingly

    • Review, recommend and implement more efficient processes and best practices in accounting procedures

    • Prepare all supporting documentation for the annual third-party review engagement

    • Coordinate, facilitate and manage all government audits

    • Ensure accuracy of general ledger postings

    Accounts Payable
    The Senior Accounting Technician will support the Accounting Manager and the Accounting Department with these responsibilities:

    • Monitor payables, to maximize cash flow while maintaining vendor relationships
    • Authorize cheques and purchase orders
    • Ensure payments are being made to vendors on a biweekly schedule (opposite week as payroll, to maintain smooth cash flow and reduce spikes on the operating line)
    • Titan: double-check the values on SO to ensure things are flowing smoothly through the departments.
    • Approve cash disbursement out of bank based on and within authorized signing limits for this position

    Back-charges

    • Make necessary enquiries, particularly of project managers, shipping, and Sales, to identify potential back-charges early, being conscious of team members’ apprehension in alerting the Accounting Manager of potential back-charges
    • Flag projects which may have potential back-charges

    Other
    The Senior Accounting Technician will support the Accounting Manager and the Accounting Department with these responsibilities:

    • Manage third-party legal relationships and obtain advice when necessary
    • Manage third-party commodity, property tax consulting, and property appraisal consulting relationships and obtain advice when necessary
    • Manage employee expense reporting system, according to Anchor policies
    • Maintain all insurance policies and annually analyze for gaps in coverage and competitiveness
    • Monitor and report on trends in utility use and cost in a timely fashion.
    • Prepare and maintain reports and files
    • Troubleshoot ERP problems for various departments as they relate to Accounting
    • Other duties arising from changes in product mix and corporate direction

    Education:

    • University Degree or college diploma in accounting
    • CPA coursework is an asset

    Experience

    Five years’ experience in an accounting position with emphasis on critical-thinking tasks, such as reconciling accounts and preparing financial statements
