Additional Residential Units (ARUs)

The City of Kingston is offering property owners the opportunity to receive financial assistance for building Additional Residential Units (ARUs) to increase the city’s rental housing supply.

ARUs, often referred to as secondary suites, in-law suites or tiny houses, are independent housing units located within or on the same property as a single-detached house, semi-detached house, or townhouse. ARUs are required to contain a washroom, sleeping space, kitchen and laundry facilities.

Property owners can receive financial assistance of up to $40,000 for detached backyard ARUs. Additional funding is also available for ARU projects that meet accessibility criteria, for the installation of rough-in services for future ARU projects, and for upgrading water services.
